Exciting new plans unveiled for King Alfred Leisure Centre

Big news for Hove’s seafront — a brand new, multi-million pound sports and leisure hub is on the way.

The shiny new venue will bring together a bunch of facilities under one roof — think swimming pools, a gym, and even a café. It’s being lined up to replace the King Alfred Leisure Centre, which has been standing since 1939 and is definitely starting to show its age.

Back in July 2024, Brighton & Hove City Council announced that the old building will eventually be demolished to make way for the upgrade.

Councillor Alan Robins, who oversees sports and leisure, said he’s confident the city will get a “spectacular new leisure centre that everyone can be proud of.”

The council’s vision? A fresh, modern spot on the seafront that’s accessible, sustainable, and designed for the whole community to enjoy.

They’ve already set aside up to £65 million for the project, showing they’re serious about keeping the city’s sports and leisure spaces in top shape.

So what happens next? The proposals are due to be discussed later this month. If all goes smoothly, locals will get a sneak peek at the designs and a chance to give feedback this autumn. A formal planning application could land by the end of the year — but construction probably won’t kick off until early 2026.

If everything goes to plan, the new centre could open its doors in spring 2028. In the meantime, the King Alfred will keep running for as long as possible.

Councillor Robins added he’s “delighted” to see things moving forward, pointing out that residents were clear about wanting the centre to stay on the seafront. Fellow councillor Joy Robinson, a regular at the current King Alfred, said she’s excited too: “This is such an important project and I can’t wait to see the finished result.”
